How to travel from Helsinki to Sottunga without a car
On the map, Sottunga may look like a place that is difficult to reach without your own car. In reality, getting from Helsinki to Sottunga by public transport is quite straightforward – as long as you plan your journey in advance.
For us at Strandhugget, the journey itself is part of the archipelago experience. Here are two different ways to travel from Helsinki to Sottunga.
Route 1: Helsinki – Turku – Galtby – Sottunga
This is a good option if you want to travel as much of the way as possible by land.
1. Helsinki–Turku by train or bus
From Helsinki, you can easily reach Turku by train or bus. The fastest trains take around two hours, and there are several bus options during the day.
You can find train tickets and timetables at VR.
By bus, you can travel with for example Onnibus or FlixBus. It is also worth checking Matkahuolto, which can help you plan and compare bus connections.
2. Turku–Galtby by Skärgårdsbuss
From Turku, continue by Skärgårdsbuss towards Korpo and Galtby. Galtby is an important interchange, as from there the journey continues by an Åland archipelago ferry.
Always check the Skärgårdsbuss timetable for your specific travel date, as services vary depending on the day of the week and the season.
3. Galtby–Sottunga by archipelago ferry
From Galtby, the journey continues by Ålandstrafiken’s archipelago ferry to Sottunga. The route takes you from the Turku archipelago to Åland and continues via Sottunga towards Långnäs.
Check the ferry timetables carefully and allow enough time for transfers.
Route 2: Helsinki – Mariehamn – Långnäs – Sottunga
Another option is to travel directly from Helsinki to Mariehamn by ferry.
1. Helsinki–Mariehamn by ferry
Ferries operate from Helsinki to Mariehamn, including Viking Line.
The ferry journey itself is already part of the archipelago experience. From Mariehamn, you continue using local connections in Åland.
2. Mariehamn–Långnäs–Sottunga
From Mariehamn, travel by bus or another local connection to Långnäs, where you continue by Ålandstrafiken’s ferry to Sottunga.
With this option, it is especially important to make sure that the ferry, bus and archipelago ferry connections fit together.
Where should you book your tickets?
When planning your journey, it is best to use the respective operator for each part of the trip:
Turku–Galtby: Skärgårdsbuss
Galtby–Sottunga: Ålandstrafiken
Helsinki–Mariehamn: Viking Line
Mariehamn–Långnäs–Sottunga: Ålandstrafiken
Matkahuolto is also useful, especially when planning bus connections and the entire journey.
Keep this in mind when planning your journey
In the archipelago, timetables are part of the journey. Not all connections operate every day, and there can be significant differences between the summer and winter seasons.
We therefore recommend planning your entire journey in advance and checking all timetables for your specific travel date. It is also a good idea to allow some extra time between connections.
Getting to Sottunga by public transport – and the journey starts in Turku
You do not need to come to Sottunga by car. Travelling by public transport requires a little more planning, but at the same time, the journey itself becomes part of the archipelago experience.
From Turku by Skärgårdsbuss to Galtby, from Galtby by archipelago ferry to Sottunga – and finally, you arrive on little Sottunga.
